Job Summary

Reporting to the Chief Human Resources Officer, the Vice President, Global Total Rewards is responsible for the continuous development, implementation, communication and maintenance of the Company’s global rewards functions, including Compensation, Benefits, HR Systems strategy, HR Analytics, Payroll and Equity Administration.


The Vice President, Global Total Rewards will work closely with the CHRO, CEO and Board of Director Compensation Committee members regarding executive and Board of Director compensation matters. This role will be based at our corporate headquarters in Burlington, MA


Primary Responsibilities:


  • Lead investor outreach strategy related to executive compensation; drive and provide the strategic direction for performance & rewards initiatives company-wide.
  • Create and maintain global position and compensation infrastructure to support the attraction, retention and motivation of employees worldwide, develop and continuously improve incentive and bonus plan design(s) that best fit with the organizational culture, priorities and business model.
  • Oversee and manage the design, implementation and administration of all benefit programs; work closely with IT, to drive HR systems strategy and priorities; continue to evolve a practice of HR Analytics and project management.
  • Manage all aspects of equity design and administration; manage the administration and compliance of global payroll.
  • Partnering with Executive Leadership to ensure that all programs support the organization’s strategic objectives, are competitive, cost effective and in compliance with legal requirements.
  • Lead, develop and mentor a team of roughly 45 individuals across the globe in the functional areas of Compensation, Benefits, HR Systems Strategy and Analytics, and Payroll and Equity Administration

Specific responsibilities by functional area include:



  • Work with external consultant to the Compensation Committee on the design and implementation of Board of Director and executive compensation programs. Participate in meetings of the Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors.
  • Develop strategy and lead investor calls related to BOD and executive compensation matters.
  • Lead the preparation and distribution of the Company’s annual proxy. Responsible for the development of the Compensation Discussion and Analysis and related tables.
  • Direct the design and development of the company’s broad-based wage and salary programs and structures including competitive short and long-term incentive plans for management, frontline and sales staff as appropriate per business unit and/or at a corporate level.
  • Lead the evaluation of jobs and the application of existing job classifications, assignment of job grades, salary ranges and FLSA status to positions.
  • Direct annual market survey and recommendations regarding changes in salary plans; oversee all activity related to published compensation surveys throughout the year and audit survey output, market trends and competitive pay positions to ensure Nuance’s salary plans meet overall company goals and objectives.

  • Responsible for ensuring Nuance’s compensation plans comply with Country, state and local laws and regulations and position. Partner with finance and legal organizations on SEC filing related matters.
  • Participate in the development of electronic compensation tools for efficient program management


  • Design, implement and routinely assess competitive benefits position, relative to market, and ensure program compliance on a country-by-country basis. Develop global population health programs to encourage a focus on healthy lifestyles.
  • Use extensive knowledge of the US health care landscape to assess benefit design, to implement and manage the company’s health and welfare programs, ensuring competitive, cost-effective plans that drive a wellness culture.
  • Contract with and actively manage benefit plan, vendors, auditors, and consultants for services, premiums, and plan administration.
  • Analyze and evaluate services, coverage, and options available through insurance and investment companies to determine programs best meeting needs of organization.
  • Manage processes and controls to ensure total compliance with regulatory agencies / organizations.

HR Systems Strategy and Analytics:

  • Working closely with IT, champion HR systems strategy, investments, and priorities.
  • Evolve a strong HR analytics function by assessing the information needs of the company and the systems requirements necessary to deliver the information.
  • Lead project management for HR including project plan development, financial, technical and resource requirements, and implementation of best practices and innovative solutions.

Payroll and Equity Administration:

  • Responsible for the plan documents, plan design, implementation, administration and compliance of equity programs including the Company’s Employee Stock Purchase Program.
  • Prepares the Company’s Annual Proxy Statement including shareholder proposals, SEC required disclosure tables, and calculation and proposal of share replenishment.
  • Forecast, monitor and report on ongoing share utilization and stock compensation.  
  • Partner with legal to comply with Company and/or individual trading blackout requirements.
  • Ensure accurate and timely payroll processing in all countries in compliance with laws and regulations through appropriate policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Select and manage payroll and equity vendor relationships.




  • A minimum of 15 years of executive, broad-based and progressive experience designing and managing global compensation, benefits and equity programs as well as extensive experience with HRIS systems management and/or strategy.
  • Demonstrated experience in a lead position working closely with the Company’s Board of Directors, Compensation Committee on all matters related to BOD and Executive Compensation in a public company including overall competitive compensation positioning, short and long-term incentive design, equity management, tax compliance, SEC regulations, executive agreement design and compliance (409A/280g). Ability to prepare and present materials in a clear and concise manner providing experiential value.
  • Demonstrated track record of designing and developing compensation strategies and plans, pay-for-performance, incentive planning, bonus, profit sharing, employee stock purchase, and other compensation vehicles. Ability to plan, design, communicate, and administer across the organization.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of state-of-the-art thinking and practices in compensation, benefits and HRIS with the ability and willingness to dive deep and rollup up one’s sleeves.
  • Demonstrable ability to achieve goals through influencing, partnering and developing productive relationships with senior leadership and line managers across the business. Be recognized as the “go to” person for all compensation and benefits issues. Self-starter with a proactive and inquisitive nature who can anticipate and preempt problems. 
  • Previous experience leading, managing and building teams in a fasted paced dynamic environment. 
  • Ability to interact easily across all levels within the organization; tactful; mature; flexible. High level of collaboration and influencing skills. Strong planning, organization, delegation and decision-making abilities. 
  • High energy and drive to create an environment of continuous improvement  
  • Experience with due diligence, mergers and acquisitions, Sarbanes-Oxley, 409(A), revised SEC regulations and other organizational change and regulatory requirements.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or related field is required. Master’s Degree in related field or MBA preferred.
